Seven Postcards From A Former Soviet Republic, From The Book, Washing Apples In Streams

"Seven Postcards From a Former Soviet Republic" was written to reflect the conditions of life in the former USSR in the early 1990's.

Having returned to Moldova and Russia many times since then, I can say that the situation in both countries has changed and in many ways for the better.

Here is a link to the poem as it was published originally in 2000. https://www.peacecorpswriters.org/pages/2000/0001/001wriwrflyn.html

The poem won the 1998 Erika Mumford Award from the New England Poetry Club.

It was a surprise and it remains an honor to have received an award from such a distinguished organization.

The selecting judge was poet Fred Marchant, pictured below.

Fred has published three books of poetry with Graywolf Press.

Said Not Said, in 2017.

The Looking House, in 2009

Full Moon Boat, in 2000.

Tipping Point, his first book, was reissued by The Word Works, in a 20th anniversary second edition, in 2013.

Deadalus Press published House on Water, House on Air, a new and selected poems, in Dublin, Ireland, in 2002.
