The Guards Unannounced


Of course, I remember Ollie Greenwood. Twelve years ago now, back when Ollie’s parents were still kicking, his kid sister Abby, who I dated, was killed in a hit and run. Ollie fell apart, got ornery with strangers, one of them a parking attendant at Deacon College, my alma mater. Ollie had just started teaching there, and after the incident was reported, they granted him an interview to explain himself before they chose a disciplinary action. It was before that interview that he should have asked for legal counsel or friendly advice. He didn’t. Too proud or maybe fear, I guess, hard to say. I’m partly at fault. I could have stepped in and done more to show him my door was always open....
